Brain Imaging Data Analysis and Data Management Specialist

The Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR;
www.drcmr.dk) provides an exciting opportunity to work on funded
projects that use advanced MR imaging techniques to understand brain
networks and their functions. The successful candidate will
participate in all aspects of data analysis and management related to
lab projects, especially those related to the “Center for Integrated
Molecular Brain Imaging (Cimbi; www.cimbi.dk)”.

Specific focus will be on analysis of structural MRI, Diffusion Tensor
Imaging (DTI), and functional MRI (fMRI) studies. Strong computer
background and (expert) use of Linux, scripting, Matlab, and other
programming skills (e.g. Perl, SQL) are preferred. Experience with
signal/data processing, statistical analysis (e.g. SPSS, SAS),
familiarity with MRI and fMRI data analysis and/or software (e.g. SPM,
FSL, Freesurfer), or neuroanatomy is desirable.

Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering,
Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Neuroscience, Cognitive
Neuroscience, Psychology, or related fields; Master's Degree preferred.

Additional training in image data analysis and management aspects will
be provided locally, and through participation in relevant national
and international courses, workshops, and conferences.

Initially the position is funded for two years. As the use of MRI for
diagnosis and research is steadily increasing at the DRCMR, in Cimbi
and elsewhere job prospects afterwards are bright.

Further details

About the department

The DRCMR has a vibrant multi disciplinary and multi national working
environment. Dedicated researchers with different backgrounds
(engineering, physics, human biology, psychology, biology, medicine
etc) work together on different research projects. Besides basic
method oriented research the majority of projects are neuro-
biologically oriented e.g. applying the numerous available scan
methodologies and data analysis techniques to answer a wide variety of
clinical, cognitive, and biological questions. Most projects are done
in close collaboration with national and international collaborators
(e.g. the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the University of
Copenhagen, and the Copenhagen University Hospitals).

The department currently has 4 MR scanners, the latest a human 3 tesla
scanner installed in 2002. Two older scanners will be substituted with
new 1.5 and 3 tesla scanners in the end of 2008 - beginning of 2009.

The department has it’s own computer network within the hospital’s
network, thus ensuring the flexibility in choice of software and work
flows necessary in a dynamic research environment. Additionally, data
analysis of Cimbi related projects are done on the DTU computer cluster.

The DRCMR is located at Hvidovre Hospital (www.hvidovrehospital.dk)
which part of the Capital region of Denmark and part of the Copenhagen
University Hospital.

The job

Main tasks:

· Being responsible for the technical aspects of MR projects
related to Cimbi (for details see the Cimbi annual report). The
applicant will report to senior researcher William Baaré and work
closely with other researchers on Cimbi projects. In a more general
sense the image analysis specialist will contribute to the quality and
execution of clinical studies at the department.

· Optimizing and developing image post-processing procedures and
software. This involves significant programming in Matlab on
primarily Linux machines. Programming languages such as Perl and SQL
are also used. Experience in statistical analysis (e.g. MATLAB, SPSS,
SAS) is desirable. The department has extensive software for imaging
processing. Besides in house developed software, open source code
software libraries such as CAMINO, SPM, FSL, MIPAV, and Freesurfer are
used extensively. A significant part of the work exists in developing
and testing so-called pipelines in which available software is
combined to solve specific tasks. Development of new solutions should
only be done in case the task at hand cannot advantageously be solved
with existing tools. Depending on the character of the work, newly
developed methods should be published in scientific journals.

· Participating in the general IT related tasks at the
department and together with other technical personnel participating
in the local “Tech of the Day” system.

Other tasks:

· Ensuring a high quality of research through quality control.

· Participating in training of non-technical personnel,
especially those collaborating in research projects.

Conditions

The post is available from September 1st or as soon as possible
thereafter. Salary is according qualifications and experience. For
more information please contact senior researcher William Baaré (Tel.
+45 3632 2978, e-mail [log in to unmask]; absent because of holiday between
05.07.08 and 26.07.08), or data processing coordinator Arnold
Skimminge (Tel. +45 3632 2978, +45 61776157, email [log in to unmask]).

Procedure

Applications and Curriculum Vitae should preferably be submitted by
email as one pdf-file to [log in to unmask]

Alternatively, the application can be send to William Baaré, MR
Department 340, Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre, Kettegaards
Allé 30, 2650 Hvidovre, Denmark.

Any potential applicant is invited to apply irrespective of age, sex,
race, religion or ethnic background.

Applications must be received no later than: 15th August 2008.
