The institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering welcomes applications for the following position: post-doc 5-year position in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Job description:

The Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering - IBEB ( is located at the campus of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Portugal). This research unit was awarded with a classification of excellent on the last international evaluation taken by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Presently, IBEB hosts 4 professors, 2 associated researchers, 4 post-docs, 13 PhD students, 7 MSc students and 4 undergraduate students. The research activities developed in this institute are focused on two main areas: Methods and clinical applications in neurophysiology and functional imaging.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research aimed at optimizing the performance of MR pulse sequences. The work to be developed by the successful candidate will contribute to foster other research projects already in progress at the host institution. More specifically, he/she will develop pulse sequences which will enable the study of cardiac muscle deformation with a high temporal resolution using the tagging MRI technique. Additionally, it is expected that he/she will contribute to harness the full potential of MRI scanners for fast acquisition in fMRI functional connectivity studies, where acquisition speed is a critical prerequisite for the efficient capture of spectral features of the BOLD signal. The successful candidate will develop his/her work at the IBEB and will have access to MR scanners in hospital environment. The technical support required for the success of his/her work will be guaranteed by Siemens Medical Solutions, under a cooperation protocol signed by this company and IBEB. The successful candidate will also participate in the supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate students and will have the prospect to develop his/her own research projects, in new or existing areas at IBEB.
The institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering has a computer system comprising 14 Linux workstations, 15PCS running Windows XP, a 3TB data storage system with automated backup and technical support and a cluster with 32 cores of 64 bits (3 GHz processors) and 1TB for data backup. Licensed software available comprises: Comsol, Matlab, Mathematica, Currry, BrainVoyager and IDL.

Candidates are expected to fulfil the following requirements: PhD in physics, medical physics, biophysics or equivalent field; preferably at least 3 years of post-doctoral experience; pulse programming experience (experience with IDEA would be preferred but not mandatory). Candidates with C/C++, Matlab programming skills and excellent proven publication track record will be favoured.
To apply, please send a motivation letter, CV, PhD certificate and two reference letters to Prof. Pedro Miranda ([log in to unmask]). The shortlisted candidates will attend a final selection interview in Lisbon.

Contract: The contract will have 5 years duration.
