This would indeed be useful and hopefully SPM8 should come up with some 
improvements on this side.

To extract the revision number for SPM files at the moment, you can use:
* http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0706&L=SPM&P=R18358
* http://brainimaging.tiddlyspot.com/ (retVer)
* adapt the commented code in {SPM}/Contents.m
