Two studies in this area are: BMJ 7 Aug 1999;319:358-361 - observational studies of 103 family doctors in Iowa, USA. 64% of questions raised in consultations were not immediately pursued, but 80% of those that were pursued were answered. Of 1101 questions, only 2 led to a formal literature search. Annals of Family Medicine Jul-Aug 2007;5(4):345-352 - study of GPs in Spain. 3511 patient consultations raised 635 clinical questions (0.18 per consultation). Doctors searched for answers to 22.8%. In both studies it was found that doctors spent an average of 2 minutes or less attempting to answer each question. I'm currently putting together a leaflet to promote our new literature/clinical query answering searching service and I'm trying to illustrate the need for information that arises from patient consultations. I remember hearing once that on average a certain number of clinical queries are generated for every patient consultation, has anybody else heard of this? and if so do you know which source(s) it came from? Many thanks in advance Louise Louise Wann Assistant Librarian Patricia Bowen Library & Knowledge Service West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Twickenham Road Isleworth Middx TW7 6AF Tel: 0208 321 5968 Fax: 0208 321 5408 Email: [log in to unmask] For the latest news and updates from the library please visit our blog http://patriciabowenlibrary.blogspot.com <http://patriciabowenlibrary.blogspot.com/> Want to give up smoking or help your patients to give up?
