University of Nottingham
Astronomy Research Support Officer

GBP 25,134 - 32,796 per annum
Salary can progress to GBP 35,837 per annum, subject to performance.

Within the School of Physics and Astronomy, the Astronomy Group makes
extensive use of computing facilities in pursuit of its research programme
into the formation and evolution of galaxies. The success of this research

support, which this post will provide.

As a member of the Group, the person appointed will act as a point of
contact for technical systems support, to develop the range of research
projects that are being undertaken. In addition, s/he will be responsible
for supporting software packages, particularly those specific to
astronomical research, and installing and maintaining the underlying
infrastructure of Linux-based PCs and servers.

Candidates must have an appropriate degree or equivalent experience, and be
thoroughly familiar with the Linux operating system from both an end user
and system management perspective. Experience with managing a networked
cluster of Linux PCs is also essential. Knowledge of astronomical software
packages and more general applications is desirable. Excellent
communication skills, the ability to prioritise work, and a positive
approach to end user support are also high priorities.
