Research Fellow (SK170/08) - University of St Andrews, Galaxy And
Mass Assembly (GAMA)

28,290 - 33,780 per annum (UK Pounds)

A researcher is sought to join the GAMA (Galaxy and Mass Assembly)
collaboration at St Andrews. GAMA is a major international survey of
galaxy structure(s) on 1kpc to 1Mpc scales. The GAMA project, led from
St Andrews by Dr Simon Driver, will combine spectroscopic data from
the AAT with optical data from VST, near-IR data from VISTA, and
far-IR data from HERSCHEL (all data flows guaranteed). Covering 250 sq
degrees of sky and probing to a redshift of 0.6, GAMA should provide
the definite dataset with which to study the development of stellar
mass, galaxy structure, and the energy output of galaxies over a 3Gyr
baseline

The researcher will be required to focus on the structural analysis of
the galaxy images, operating and developing software for automated
bulge-disc decomposition of the VST and VISTA data. The appointee will
also be involved in all aspects of GAMA planning, data collection, and
scientific exploitation

The post is initially for 2 years from 1 October 2008, or as soon as
possible thereafter with the possibility of a further 2 years
depending on performance and funding.

You must have a PhD in astrophysics, familiarity with galaxy image
analysis and profile extraction, a demonstrated knowledge of pipeline
software development, and a track record in the scientific
exploitation of large datasets.
