CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: July 1, 2008 Sustainable Economic Development and the Influence of Information Technologies: Dynamics of Knowledge Society Transformation A book edited by Dr. Muhammed KARATAS, Mugla University, Turkey and Dr. Mustafa Zihni TUNCA, Suleyman Demirel University, Turkey Introduction In the 21st century, the transformation process of a nation into a knowledge society is primarily affected by size, form and the direction of development. While some countries quickly complete this process and increase their social welfare, the digital divide between these rapidly advancing countries and the rest of the world has become increasingly wider. By examining the factors which significantly affect the digital divide, we can address the dynamics and effects of change, which include the acquisition of new knowledge, industrial development, economic development, technological development, migration of people and resources, changes in religion and ideologies, organizational changes, and so on. Information technology is the key concept for sustainable economic development within both macro and micro perspectives as it can assist in addressing individual, organizational, regional, and global development. Hence, there is an imperative need for an in-depth, systematical investigation of the dynamics and effects of the knowledge society transformation process in order to address the influence of information technologies on sustainable economic development in the 21st century. Objective of the Book This book will aim to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of information technology as it relates to sustainable economic development and the development of knowledge societies. Specifically, the book will focus on the following key objectives: - To address and discuss the concepts and theories relevant to sustainable economic development, - To provide understanding for the influence of information technologies on sustainable economic development, and - To identify the dynamics of knowledge society transformation. Target Audience The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the fields of economics, business administration, information and knowledge management in various disciplines, e.g. information and communication sciences, administrative sciences and management, economics, sociology, psychology, computer science, and information technology. The book will also provide insights and support executives concerned with the influences of knowledge and information technologies on sustainable development at both the micro and macro levels. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: A comparison between modern and classical sustainable economic development approaches Major problems of less developed and developing countries Less developed countries and the digital divide The influence of the changing role of government and public infrastructure investments Development planning and strategies: The role of public and private sectors The influence of business ethics and social responsibilities The role of SMEs on sustainable development Entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial skills The correlation amongst social classes, social welfare and knowledge societies The role of natural resources on sustainable development The importance of demographic factors on knowledge society transformation The correlation between education and breech of intellectual rights The influences of energy and transportation policies on sustainable development Renewable energy investments and sustainable development Socio-cultural development and knowledge society transformation The role of politics on sustainable development IT and change in corporate structure The impact of IT on unemployment The impact of piracy and electronic crimes on economic development Intellectual capital in less developed and developing countries R&D activities in less developed and developing countries The influences of savings and investments on sustainable development Industrial innovations and sustainable development Technological acquisitions and sustainable development Foreign investments in less developed and developing countries Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 1, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by September 1, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by January 5, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
