EURopean Intensive Seminars of PETrology

Third Seminar"Petrology of the lithosphere in extensional settings"
Eötvös University, Budapest (Hungary),
August 21-31, 2008

Deadline for application: 15 April, 2008

We invite applications from PhD students (Master students and post-docs will be considered if places are not filled by PhD) to the third EURISPET Seminar on "Petrology of the lithosphere in extensional settings". EURISPET is a Marie Curie “Series of Events” funded by the European Commission through the Sixth Framework Programme.

Period: August 21st (arrival) – August 31, 2008 (departure).
Venue: Hotel Ramada Budapest (http://www.ramadabudapest.com) Organizer: Lithosphere Fluid Research Lab, Eötvös University Budapest (http://lrg.elte.hu)
Participants: The School is limited to 35 participants supported by the EC (30 Early Stage Researchers – up to 4 years research activity including PhD –, and 5 Experienced Researchers – up to 10 years research experience –), with the possibility of other 5 participants attending on a self-funded basis. The participants may come from any country worldwide, but a few conditions exist to be eligible (see “eligibility” on http://www.eurispet.eu). In addition, selection of participants will consider criteria of gender balance, regional balance, quality of past research, student status (with preference for PhD, post-doc) and knowledge of English.

Program: The School will consist of:
-        One day for student presentations to enable participants to present and discuss their own research
-        5 days of formal lectures with world-known experts
-        One day of practical sessions in the laboratory (petrography, microthermometric calculations, heating and cooling experiments, Raman, etc.)
-        Two days of excursions to the most important xenolith-bearing alkali basaltic outcrops of the Pannonian Basin: 1 day in Nógrád-Gömör (North Hungary) and 1 day in Bakony-Balaton Highland (central Hungary)
-        One day on the Building the European Research Area: a scientific career in Europe.
A detailed program can be consulted at http://www.eurispet.eu.

Topics covered in the Seminar will include: Introduction to subduction, orogenesis and collapse; Microstructure and textural features of granulite xenoliths; Partial melting and metasomatic events in the upper mantle; Fluid, silicate and sulfide inclusions in the lithospheric mantle; Deep seismics and seismology, deep lithospheric geophysical model; Deformation analyses in mantle xenoliths.

Preliminary list of lecturers:
Rainer Abart (Berlin, Germany), Gábor Bada (Budapest, Hungary), Robert J. Bodnar (Blacksburg, USA), Bernardo Cesare (Padova, Italy), Gábor Dobosi (Budapest, Hungary), Hilary Downes (London, UK), György Falus (Budapest, Hungary), Carlos Garrido (Granada, Spain) Marek Grad (Warsaw, Poland), Fernardo Gervilla (Granada, Spain), Gregory Houseman (Leeds, UK), Pierre Schiano (Clermont-Ferrand, France), Ioan Seghedi (Bucharest, Romania), Andrea Tommasi (Montpellier, France), Kálmán Török (Budapest, Hungary)
