Italian Writers in Leeds

Italian Writers in Leeds is a series of events featuring some of the most interesting and exciting contemporary Italian writers. It was launched in 2007 by the Department of Italian at the University of Leeds.

The aim of the series is to increase awareness of contemporary Italian writers in the UK and at the same time to bring these writers to the North of England, reflecting the interest in Italian issues in the region. An account of the writer's visit, in the form of an interview or discussion, will be published under the 'Writer's Desktop' rubric, in the journal The Italianist.

Each year an Italian writer will be invited to visit the Department and to give a lecture or lead a discussion, followed in each case by questions.

The first guest, in May 2007, was Marcello Fois, author of celebrated detective novels set in his native Sardinia, and winner of the 2007 Super Grinzane Cavour prize. The second, due to visit in January 2008, will be Giancarlo De Cataldo, author of the successful Romanzo criminale, recently made into a film, and editor of the collection of short-stories Crimini. Massimo Carlotto has agreed to come to Leeds in 2008/09.
