1 POSITION AS PhD. RESEARCH FELLOW
vacant at the research center Physics of Geological processes (PGP),
University of Oslo.

The position is on the project “Processes in volcanic basins and the
implications for global warming and mass extinction", funded by the
Research Council of Norway. The position is available for 3 years.

PGP is a national Center of Excellence and a cross-disciplinary research
centre. It involves ca. 60 physicists and Earth scientists from 15
countries, and its mission is to obtain a fundamental and quantitative
understanding of the complex patterns and processes of the Earth. The
Centre is organized under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural  
Science.

The successful candidate will work on metamorphic, volcanic and
hydrothermal processes in sedimentary basins. Experience with
petrographical methods and geochemistry is required, and an interest in
numerical and theoretical studies of geological systems is an advantage.

The work involves collaboration with an active group of students and
researchers, and will involve field work and international exchange.

The PhD. position is for a period of three years, with a preferred
starting date:  March 1. 2008.

A PhD. position requires a Master degree or similar in
geology/geochemistry/geophysics. Relevant background and experience in
quantitative research will be given weight in the evaluation.  
Candidates who have
submitted their Master thesis prior to the closing date for applications
may apply for the position. A prerequisite for taking up the position is
the successful completion of the Master degree.
