Lacey,  you might contact Dr. Sue Ware at the Denver Museum of Natural History (I refuse to use its "new" name).  She is the current expert on the pathologies of Canis dirus at Rancho La Brea.  She just finished her dissertation a year or so ago.  I know she'd love to talk dog disease with you.
