Perhaps the best place to start looking at this whole question is Chapter 4 "Citizens, Scholars and Masters" by Jeremy Catto in vol 1 of the History of the University of Oxford: The Early Oxford Schools, Clarendon Press, 1984, pp151-92. This deals with many of the issues raised in this discussion.
