medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Ann,

At the admittedly much later U of Wittenberg, one source of
difficulty was simple overcrowding.  The influx of students raised
rents then as they do today.  In fact, there were some terms
when students camped in the fields outside the walls because
there was simply nothing to be had in town.  Whether this was
a problem in England, I do not know; but surely others on the
list do and can enlighten the rest of us.

[an example of a rather dim answer]

Regards,
Frank
