Today I sent this message to our local list in the North West it has been suggested that it might be useful to the wider health library network. The contact details are geared for the North West but if you search the Archon list or the hospital records list you can find details of either your nearest archive repository or where any other existing records for your own hospital are held Regards Eileen (formerly a member of the Society of Archivists) _____ From: A list for health related libraries within the North West of England [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Eileen Hume Sent: 18 October 2007 13:39 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Old Books and Records Hello to all you LIHNN listers Just putting a former job role hat on again. I have regressed into my comfort zone - in a previous job role I was a Borough Archivist what relevance is this are you thinking. I attended an excellent LIHNN course at Royal Blackburn Hospital last week. I was very impressed with Linda's library when she gave us a tour during the lunch break. Some items she showed us were some old hospital record books. These were fascinating but made me wonder do any of the rest of hold these type of documents. A modern library is not the ideal location for this type of material, they require special storage conditions concerning light, relative humidity and temperature levels that conform to BS 5454. As official records they are subject to the requirements of the National Archive. Records of this type are usually stored either in a County Record Office or an archive repository that has Legal Place of Deposit Status. These premises are subject to a rigorous inspection process from the National Archive. I would suggest that if you hold any archive records of you hospital that you deposit them in one of these specialist repositories. You still retain ownership just placing them on deposit (all properly documented) with the repository. Here are some useful addresses in case you need further advice if you hold this type of material. Some records (Cheshire) are even stored in Deepstore located hundreds of feet underground in the salt mines at Winsford!!! I promise I will stop now and get back to my present job Thank you for your patience Regards Eileen Eileen Hume Head of Trust Library Services McArdle Library Education Centre Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Arrowe Park Hospital Upton Wirral CH49 5PE Tel: 0151 604 7223 D.D. 0151 604 7577 Internal Ext: 8610 Internal Ext Direct: 8608 Fax: 0151 604 7223 Email: [log in to unmask] Find out more about what the Library Service can offer you by visiting the Library website: http://www.whnt.nhs.uk/ld/library_services/ National Library for Health: http://www.library.nhs.uk <http://www.library.nhs.uk/> Are you part of the Wirral Local Health Community?
