Ministerial powers in the Civil Contingencies Act apply to planning (I.e. absence of an incident) as well as the incident itself ________________________________ From: This list is for those interested in Data Protection issues [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Tim Turner Sent: 29 August 2007 10:56 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [data-protection] Data Sharing for emergency planners Surely in an emergency, people need to share any data they think they need to and worry about the Data Protection implications later? I have heard (possibly apocryphal) stories that the emergency services did not share data quickly enough during the London terror attacks because of concerns about Data Protection, which is ridiculous. It's one thing to worry that the Government might be attempting to gather too much information (that's a reasonable debate to have), but in an emergency situation, valuable time should not really be spent fretting about data sharing. If I was rung up in the middle of the night, I would say "do it, it's fine, trust me" and put the phone down, whatever I was asked. Would anyone seriously contemplate saying 'no'? The handouts are available on the uk resilience web site or can be downloaded from the NAIM web site at www.NAIM.uk.net.
