For software try Read and Write ( www.texthelp.com ) but I suggest that he has an appropriately qualified and experienced person to help him use it initially.

Please could members advise me on what software might be of best benefit to a dyslexic young adult for spell checking college level work. The regular spell checker in 'Word' is not very helpful because he often doesn't know which option to choose from those offered. His written work is perfectly understandable once the reader has appreciated that most of the words are spelled phonetically, but presentationally, this does not look good, nor is it impressive on job applications!

  Any ideas?
  Many thanks
