Political Theory
 
 
UCL wishes to appoint a Lecturer/Teaching Fellow as a maternity cover post.  This appointment is a 60% FTE post for 9 months from 1 October 2007 and will provide teaching support for the MA in Legal and Political Theory.

The Department of Political Science represents the core staff within the School. Britain’s only department to specialise in graduate teaching and research, it offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, comparative government and public policy-making and administration.  The Department is now recognised as a leading centre for political research not just in the UK but globally.
 
 
Background
 
The MA in Legal and Political Theory is one of 6 Masters programmes offered by the Department.  It provides students with the key analytical skills to study the ethical dimensions of public policy. The programme explores the moral quality of the decisions citizens and professionals take, and the justice of the legal and political structures within which they operate. The Programme Coordinator for the MA in Legal and Political Theory will be on maternity leave for the 2007/8 autumn and spring terms.  The holder of this post will work closely Professor Richard Bellamy to ensure that the MA programme runs smoothly throughout the 2007/8 session.
 
Responsibilities
 
Specific duties are as follows:
 
-          Teaching the compulsory course on “Meanings of Liberty” (a total of 10 sessions of 2-3 hours each over the October – December period), plus associated essay marking;
-          Teaching the two option courses “Equality, Justice and Difference” (Term 2) and “Contemporary Political Philosophy 1 (Term 1)” (a total of 10 sessions of 2-3 hours each for each course), plus associated essay marking;
-          Organisation of the Political Theory seminars which form a compulsory element of the MA programme in the autumn term (up to a maximum of 8 seminars);
-          Organisation and facilitation of the Peer-Assisted Learning sessions for MA students that run alongside the Political Theory seminars in the autumn term.
-          Organisation and facilitation of the Political Theory PhD seminar during the autumn and spring terms.
-          Supervision of research students (depending on expertise).
-          Regular weekly student ‘office hours’ in term time and personal tutor responsibilities for Masters students;
-          Second marking of examination papers and essays as required;
-          Supervision of up to 8 student dissertations where appropriate;
-          Normal duties of teaching administration including maintaining attendance records for courses taught; reporting problems to Student Administration/Departmental Tutor/Head of Department; maintaining quality assurance documentation for the courses taught; attending departmental meetings as required.
 

Person specification

 
Essential
 
·         A PhD in politics or political theory or an appropriate discipline – those nearing completion of a PhD will also be considered;
·         Previous experience of teaching in a subject related to legal and political theory at postgraduate level;
·         Experience of teaching administration at university level.
·         Flexibility and ability to work well as part of a team
 
 
Desirable
 
·         Experience of quality assurance procedures associated with university teaching;
·         A publication track record.
 
 

Salary

 
This appointment is for 9 months from 1 October 2007.  The salary will be on the Lecturer A scale at grade 7, point 33, £30,012 plus £2,572 London Allowance, at 60% FTE pro rata.
