Presented by Richard McCracken, head of IP at the Open University and co-author of Buying and Clearing Rights (Print, Broadcast and Multimedia Routledge, 1995) and Alma Hales, Deputy Head of Intellectual Property at the Open University. This one-day course will offer participants a clearer understanding of how to approach the process of rights clearance. Participants will gain an understanding of: € types of works which are protected € rights ownership and licensing € the status of copyright exceptions € the meaning of Œfair dealing¹ € the process of rights clearance € how to administer the clearance process Understanding copyright and how to clear the rights in existing content for inclusion in new services and productions is a significant challenge for producers, researchers and multimedia developers. Now universities and colleges face these challenges as they plan to re-publish existing content in online courseware delivered through Œvirtual learning environments¹.
