Subject: RE: Drop in School visits?

Hi

Although we experience variations, rather than a decline in numbers (if we're down one year, we tend to go up again the next year), the following factors have all had an influence on our numbers. We average about 16000 school children a year for Bannockburn (most of whom are studying the Wars of Independence in the 5-14 Curriculum), but this can vary from year to year. Here are some of the things which we think can affect our numbers:
1. when the school holidays fall in relation to the point at which the relevant subject is being studied in the Curriculum;
2.the cost of bus hire (if your museum cannot take a school for a full day, is there someplace else in the area which they can visit on the same day - makes justifying the cost of bus hire easier for the teacher). Can they bring two classes (possibly sixty children) at one time - again it helps teachers to justify bus costs if this is the case;
3. Bad weather;
4. the difficulty for secondary school teachers in persuading colleagues to let students out of class for a day
5. Are you offering a topic which is unique or has strong relevance to your site - somewhere else might have a well established programme doing the same thing. We have a programme entitled 'Mary Queen of Scots at Alloa Tower' which competes with at least two or three other sites in Scotland all 'doing' Mary!

Hope this is some help!

Regards

Evelyn

I think the most likely reason is that this year teachers are busy
implementing the new GCSE science syllabuses.

the numbers of schools visiting are dropping. Is this something that anyone
else has noticed, either in Sussex or further afield? And if you have, do
you know what is stopping schools from visiting? I'm sure that there are a
range of reasons, but I'd be interested to hear you thoughts on this.
