A signature is a representation of a piece of data - the person's name - but
does not itself convey any additional information about the person.
(Unless, I suppose, you are a handwriting expert who can work out roughly
where you were taught to write.) The signature is therefore no different in
Data Protection terms than the person's name printed out. Indeed, in many
circumstances now an e-mail with a typed name carries the same legal weight
as a signed piece of paper.

I do like the practical suggestions of using different signatures in
different contexts, however.

Are signatures personal data ? If we provide copies of letters under FOI
or DP, should the signature of the officer or person be blanked out ?

One of our officers is concerned that his signature could be copied and
used fraudulently.
