You should be able to send a spectrum to TOPCAT as a VOTable if you want. In fact the situation of PLASTIC messages regarding spectra is not very good. Currently AstroScope normally sends spectra around as FITS tables, calling them FITS images. This is largely a consequence of (IMHO) inadequacies in the SSAP standard, though imprecision of currently available PLASTIC messages doesn't help. Basically spectra over PLASTIC is a bit of a mess at the moment, I'd better try to sort this out, though the required discussions on the various IVOA lists etc don't fill me with enthusiasm. Anyway, once the standards are sorted out properly, SPLAT will need some tweaks to implement them properly, but the machinery's all in place, so the additional work should be pretty minor. Since the current SPLAT's not in keoe or any very official release, I guess this flakiness doesn't matter too much.
