 ePrints UK did (and does) provide a UK wide demo repository search service 
(created as an RDN project), covering pretty much all harvestable 
repositories, with about 55k records available (last time I looked). For one 
reason and another it was not heavily promoted at the close of the project. 
Greg Tourte (system developer no 2) did some interesting development work 
with it late on, so that it was possible to cross-search only those 
repositories selected by the user.
