medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (16. June) is the feast day of: Ferreolus and Ferrutio (d. c. 212) F & F came to Irenaeus of Lyons from Asia Minor (legend says they had been converted by St. Polycarp). Irenaeus ordained them, one a deacon and the other a priest, and set them to work as missionaries in the Besancon area. They worked there for about 30 years before being caught in an outburst of persecution, at which time they were tortured and beheaded. Benno of Meissen (d. 1106) Benno was a count's son, educated at Hildesheim, made head of the canons at SS Simon & Jude (Goslar), and in 1066 appointed bishop of Meissen. In the Investiture Contest, B. was one of the few German emperors who supported the pope, for which he was imprisoned for a year and later deposed. B. went and evangelized Slavs during the time of his exile. B was canonized in 1523, an event that drew down a violent denunciation from the pen of Martin Luther. When Meissen went Protestant, B's relics were translated to Munich, where he is principal patron. Guy of Cortona (blessed) (d. 1245?) An early disciple of Francis of Assisi, who soon became a recluse. He was famous for his eloquence and miraculous healings. Lutgardis (d. 1246) Lutgardis was a native of Tongres, sent to a Benedictine convent at age 12 because her father had lost her dowry in a bad investment. She had no religious vocation---until Christ appeared to her one day. She got very, very pious then. After 12 years she transferred to a French-speaking Cistercian community, and despite her poor abilities with that language, L. became famed as a spiritual counsellor. She was also a noted healer. -- Dr. Phyllis G.
