Ah - that begins to
make a modicum of sense. But if participation in the new Communities of
Practice requires one to actually visit the CILIP website each time, I'm
afraid, for me at least, there will not be one tenth of the utility that I
get from a mailing list which is delivered to me without the need for me to
actively seek it each time.
This is a point that I have made in several
contexts and I have observed that there seem to be two kinds of people in the
world. One kind prefers to go to a website and seek participative
communication when moved to do so; the other kind prefers to have the
communication delivered to them and read it when moved to do so *but* without
having to actually navigate to each site at which they might see such things
... if that makes sense.
Many mailing lists can be (and are) collocated
into one place (my email account). When mailing lists are replaced by
web-based forums, call them Communities of Practice or come what may, they
are NOT collocated in a helpful way to the user. You may judge from
this that I am definitely of the second persuasion.

I believe it was Chris Armstrong, CILIP National Councillor, who
first posted it to the list. Several CILIP councillors, including myself,
were aware that there were plans to replace LIS-CILIP with a series
of Communities of Practice on the CILIP web site. Chris Armstrong
formally raised the issue at CILIP council on April 5th. My recollection
and scribbled notes record that it was agreed at that meeting that the
list NOT be closed without the consent of Council.
