Douglas Knoop and G P Jones (whose work on Vale Royal Saltzman was summarising) write in The Medieval Mason, 3rd ed, Manchester UP, 1967, page 45 that at Vale royal in the three years 1278, 1279 and 1280, 35,000 loads of stone were carted from the quarries at Eddisbury some 4 or 5 miles to the site of the abbey. The quarrier' wages amounted to £104 and the remuneration of the carters to £347.
