medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

On Venantius of Delminium (today Duvno in Bosnia and Herzegowina, roman
Dalmatia). His relics were brought to Rome as seen in Liber Ponrificalis
LXXIIII: "Eodem tempore fecit beatis martyribus Venantio, Anastasio, Mauro
et aliorum multorum martyrum, quorum reliquias de Dalmatias et Histrias
adduci praeceperat, ..." The saints are from Dalmatia, only Maurus comes
from Parentium in Histria. He is depicted also on the apsis mosaic in
basilica Eufrasiana (6th cent.) in Poreč-Parentium. Matej

....Pope John IV (640-642), a Dalmatian whose father's name was Venantius,
had
V.'s relics brought to Rome and laid to rest at the Lateran baptistery in an
oratory dedicated to him ....That oratory is now the Cappella San Venanzio.

i have seen the mosaics before, but am severely challenged when it comes to
this early stuff and know nothing about them beyond what i can see.

looks to me to be original --or perhaps a very good "restoration"-- and
gives
us a rare look at early fenestration.

seems to be a thin sheet of stone pierced by an arcade, the "glass" on the
other siee of which would have been even thinner, translucent sheets of
alabaster(?).
