Dear Listmember

Work is proceeding on the 2nd Edition of MIDAS, the UK Historic Environment Information Standard. Retitled MIDAS Heritage, it will have to meet the needs of Heritage Protection Reform, developments such as the MIDAS Interoperability Toolkit, modern Geographic Information Systems and the need to project heritage information to new audiences via initiatives such as the Heritage Gateway.

Following an extensive review of requirements, and project approach, the development phase of the MIDAS 2nd Edition Project is now expected to continue until middle of 2007. The key stages and tasks have been identified and consist of a preparatory phase, revision of the ten existing information groups, co-ordinating working groups for six new information groups, and quality checks before and after a peer review.

It is important that MIDAS Heritage continues to meet the needs of the heritage community and for this reason your help would be very much appreciated. This can involve anything from suggesting new units of information to participating in working groups or taking part in the peer-review process. Contributions can be made and progress followed on the project SmartGroup: www.smartgroups.com/groups/midas2. You are invited to join this group and I would urge you to encourage others to do so too. Alternatively you can send contributions directly to me. Suggestions need to be in by end of April. Additional information about the project and the project team is available online at www.fish-forum.info.

Please help MIDAS Heritage expand and improve to meet the needs of historic environment users from all over the UK.

My thanks in anticipation.
