Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope that you are all well. I write to ask for your help in
circulating information about an exciting new permanent post in Catholic
Studies within the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham
University. I would be immensely grateful if you could circulate it and
draw attention to it through all channels available to you.

I attach the details, job specification and person specification as
copied from the University's web-site (https://jobs.dur.ac.uk). It is
requested that applications be made on-line. I also attach initial
details of a new regional research project in Receptive Ecumenism and
the Local Church, upon which the appointee will be engaged for 50% of
his/her time for the first three years in post, with the remaining 50%
being split between personal research (20-30%), and development of the
new Durham Research Centre for Contemporary Catholic Studies and
teaching on our MA programme in Catholic Studies (20-30%).

The starting salary (within the Lecturer range, rather than
post-doctoral research fellowship range) is £26,402-£29,716 p.a.

Starting in the first instance (for 3 years) as a Research Fellowship
the post will then become a permanent Lecturership in Catholic Studies
(subject to satisfaction of the University's probationary terms).
Applicants must have a strong record of published output and expertise
in either modern Catholic theology or the social-scientific study of
contemporary Catholicism.

In short, the post is permanent; it is salaried on the Lecturer Scale,
with the first three years being devoted almost entirely to personal and
project research and administration as a Research Fellow. Thereafter,
standard lecturing duties would come on-line (although still protecting
a considerable amount of time for research, as a research-driven
Department).

As this all reflects, the post is not simply a standard post-doctoral
fellowship. The modestly higher level of remuneration that is being
offered reflects the fact that we are seeking someone with some
experience and publications in hand. It may even be that a more senior
experienced person than the available salary suggests might be attracted
to this exciting post that will guarantee very considerable research
activity for the first three years, a key role in the development of the
Durham Research Centre for Contemporary Catholic Studies, and a
permanent post within the excellent and lovely context of the Department
of Theology and Religion here at Durham.

Please do not hesitate to encourage any potentially interested parties
to make contact with me, either by e-mail, or by telephone: 0191 334 3947.

With kindest regards and many thanks,

Paul
