WinBUGS Circulation List Servers,

Will you please circulate on the WinBUGS list the following notice of a Bayesian Statistics Workshop using WinBUGS that I will present, August 8-9, 2006 for The Wildlife Society Western Section at Humboldt State University?

If you prefer a shorter announcement, please let me know.

Thank you.

Announcement of a 2 Day Biometrics Workshop

Introduction to Bayesian Statistical Inference
for Natural Resource Scientists and Managers
including Bayesian Mixed-Effects Modeling & Capture Recapture Analysis
using WinBUGS Software

Presented by The Wildlife Society – Western Section
August 8-9, 2006, 8:30 am – 5 pm
Humboldt State University
Arcata, California
Registration at: http://www.tws-west.org/

Presenter: Professor Howard Stauffer, Humboldt State University

Description: an introduction to Bayesian statistical inference for natural resource scientists and managers, with an emphasis on its practical application to real-world problems

Topics:
·        Introduction to the basic ideas of Bayesian statistical inference
·        Priors, likelihoods, and posteriors of parameters, and the interpretation of Bayesian statistics
·        Bayes Theorem
·        conjugate closed-form solutions to Bayesian analysis for binary data (binomial model), count data (Poisson model), and continuous normally distributed data
·        Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation methods: Gibbs Sampling and the Metropolis-Hastings Algorithm
·        Bayesian hypothesis testing and decision theory
·        A priori parsimonious model selection and inference strategy with Bayesian statistical analysis using the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), DIC weights, and model averaging
·        hands-on examples of Bayesian statistical analysis applied to sample datasets, using the Bayesian statistical software WinBUGS: multiple linear regression, logistic regression, mixed-effects, and mark-recapture analysis
·        use of both simulated and real-world datasets such as Oregon Siskiyou Mountains Salamander, Northern Spotted Owl, Beach Layia, and European Dipper datasets
·        Participants will have hands-on experience with WinBUGS
