medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture i have argued that one finds the earliest intimations of vita apostolica in the early 11th cn, with the "heresies" that quite suddenly crop up among the commoners.  in particular a certain monk Heribert wrote a letter about a heresy in the perigord which lobrichon via bischoff dated to early 11th cn which says "they say they lead the apostolic life."  i make the argument both in a piece in annales
"La vie apostolique en Aquitaine au tournant du millennium: Paix de Dieu, culte de reliques et communautés ‘hérétiques’," Annales, 46:3 (1991): 573-83
and in my book on Ademar of Chabannes
Relics, Apocalypse, and the Deceits of History: Ademar of Chabannes (989-1034) (Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press, 1995)

the later more mainstream expressions of the v.a. that have historians dating it to the later 11th or 12th centuries are, by this reading, the domestication of a broader and more radical demotic strains of xn religiosity already set in motion at the time of the peace assemblies and mass pilgrimages of the late 10th and early 11th cns.  see an essay on "Heresy: an anthropological viewpoint" by Talal Asad in Social History, 1980.

Dear Listmembers,

I am a graduate student working on an article that involves the origins of
the vita apostolica and emerging emphasis on the active life and
preaching.  So far, I'm citing two sources, Caroline Bynum's "The
Spirituality of Regular Canons in the Twelfth Century," (1982) and M.-D.
Chenu's "Monks, Canons, and Laymen in Search of the Apostolic Life"
(1968).  Bynum gives a framework of 1050-1215 for the emergence of the
vita apostolica, and Chenu argues it takes hold later in the 12th
century.  Does anyone know of more recent scholarship on the timeframe of
the emergence of the apostolic life, or any scholarship that indicates
that medieval calls to follow the apostolic life were centered on
preaching?  I'd be grateful for any info. on this topic.

Thank you,
Suzanne LaVere
