WELL, I'M JUST A GUIRI.
1) my Pt friend who grew up in Val de Cambre (Minho side of
Miño) can understand my galego apart from some lexicon and always has
said he likes because it reminds him in many ways his grandmother`s
speech, for example she wd say auga not agua... he says the portuguese
his mother spoke with her mother (the grandmother in question) was
always diff from the pt she spoke to him, wanting him to learn the
school portuguese of the south....
pois todo isto para suxerir que os idiomas raianos weren't as
different 2 generations ago as they are today.... even though of
course they have had different histories, have developed in diff
directions, are different languages today... I dont think languages
have firm boundaries.... and the fala of the Miño-galego has
sometimes more in common with the fala of the Minho-português than
with the galego of Ferrol.
2) moro no novo mundo, un ámbito moi distinto do vello
continento where all these divisions seem more critical or urgent...
no meu barrio/bairro en Montreal, a segunda fala é o portugués, e
os pt de aquí entenden bastante ben o meu galego cando merco
frango/polo... tamén os xemelgos de barcelona ao outro lado da
rúa entenden o meu galego-castrapo (porque non falo
castelán)...
2) last wk in la grosse pomme i read cachos of galician poems
from new bk and sp. speaking poet listening said he understood almost
nothing, portuguese translator present said he understood
most....
is it easier to cross over on this side? my other pt translator
friends understand me, my chilean poet pal writes me in pt and I write
in gl, a woman in brasil is writing me in fr and pt and i answer in fr
and gl.... tis not the day to day life of everyone, but def galician
has opened me to a world

mind you i come from a place (quebec) where languages leak
daily... and the french we speak is different but is still
french! I like a lang like galician that has variants in its musicks,
and even if i learned galego normativo, it was only a way of opening a
door to a vast universe....
