medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

The question is not able to be answered so easily as referring to the Gospel of
Nicodemus, because the story of the Harrowing of Hell occurs in other
literature which was most likely influenced by the Godpel of Nicodemus. As I
recall it appears in about five morality plays including the York morality
play. I am talking of the top of my head here because I don't have the time to
look it up right now. The exact information contained in the sermon may have
come from any of these sources, or could have been a creative embellishment by
the preacher himself.
