Dear colleagues,
Ever since the Brundtland report (1987) and the Rio Earth Summit
(1992), has sustainable development been an obligatory keyword in policy
documents and political programmes of political parties, governments, companies
and international organizations. While many promises have been made, the
implementation has lacked behind. This is why the Johannesburg World Summit
(2002) produced a "Plan for Implementation", which details the
activities and policies which should be implemented in the course of a decade.
An international group of scientists gathered in Oslo last month noted that, with 25% of
"implementation decade" already passed, implementation of an
important part of the plan has not even started. They raise concern that given
the current lack of activity and interest on part of policy makers less action
will happen than during the previous decade. In the " Oslo
declaration", they call for action and propose specific activities. For
more information, see www.indecol.ntnu.no
We are calling for other scientists to support this
declaration, as we are using the declaration to argue for more EU funding in
the area of sustainable consumption and production. You can read and sign the
Oslo Declaration at: http://www.oslodeclaration.org/
