medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Good day, eh? Sandra Lowerre wrote, in connection with Hildegard von Bingen's "Ordo Virtutum": > Yes, the devil is the only male voice and the only one who > is not in fact singing. Luther, in his table talk and elsewhere, often described music as an "outstanding gift of God" (WA-Tischreden III, No. 3815). I vaguely remember learning in my youth that, since music was a gift of God, the Devil was portrayed in medieval drama as speaking since he cannot sing. Can anyone out there pass learned judgement on the devil's vocal music capability or lack thereof? Many thanks!
