medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (30. January) is the feast day of:

Bathildis (d. 680) Bathildis was born in England and brought as a
slave to the Frankish court of Clovis II.  In 649 she married Clovis;
all three of their sons became king. When Clovis died in 655, B.
became regent and apparently did a very good job. She endowed
several monasteries, including St. Denis, Corbie, and Chelles,
eventually retiring to Chelles in c. 665. My source says she was
canonized by Pope Nicholas I, which doesn't seem possible, since the
first papal canonization is supposed to have been over a century
after his pontificate. Anyone have any insight on this?

Aldegundis (d. 684) Aldegundis was a native of Hainault (Belgium).
She joined her sister Waldeturdis' convent at Mons, living there as a
hermit. A's cell developed into the monastery of Mauberge.

Adelelmus (Aleaume) (d. c. 1100) Adelelmus was a Poitevin soldier.
While on pilgrimage to Rome, he met Robert of Chaise-Dieu and decided
to become a monk there. The queen of Castile heard of A's holiness
and was so impressed that she invited him to Burgos; a monastery was
built for him there. A. was active in the reconquista and is now
patron of Burgos.

A modern saint: Hyacintha Mariscotti (d. 1640) An interesting change
from the oppressive piety of so many early modern female saints, HM
was a noble Italian woman who was forced against her will to become a
nun---her family was apparently sick and tired of her complaining
after a marquis passed over her and married her younger sister.
Hyacintha spent ten years being a rotten nun, but converted when she
fell seriously ill. She then made up for lost time with a great deal
of penance and austerity, also becoming well known for her charity
and helping to found two congregations to tend to the sick and aged.
HM was canonized in 1807.
