Wasn't there an article by ?Philip Armitage in "Diet and Crafts in towns" (D Serjeantson & T Waldron, eds, 1989, BAR 199) on metapodial floors? haven't got it to hand so can't check. there's a piece of one in the Oxford Museum, can't remember which way up the bones are though (they are definitely vertical). perhaps rows of bone were decorative with some other material between that hasn't survived - wooden tiles like parquet?
