Are we in Crisis?
Challenges in Teaching and Research in the new Century
A Forum jointly sponsored by the Association of Art Historians and the Design History Society
26 November 2004, 1.30 – 6pm
Aston Campus of University of Central England at Gosta Green, Birmingham
Room 201 (first floor)
Members are invited to attend this important meeting.
Over the last few years a number of issues have emerged which give serious cause for concern to the art and design history community. Several degrees in the history of art and design, mainly (but not only) in the new Universities, have been closed or are under threat, and application numbers are failing to rise. The role of historical and critical studies on studio based courses is being redefined, sometimes in ways that threaten the distinctiveness of the discipline. In the research field, changes in the RAE arrangements apparently mean that in many instances art and design history will be submitted with other disciplines in the next exercise.
The purpose of this forum is to exchange views concerning this situation, identify issues and problems, and address possible solutions at an institutional, national and organisational level. Amongst the topics to be addressed will be:
There will be short introductions by: Barbara Burman (University of Southampton), Christopher Breward (Victoria & Albert Museum) and
Fran Lloyd (Kingston University).
This event is FREE and includes afternoon refreshments.
