In ecclesiastical vesture, whether monastic or non monastic, 'cappa' may
refer to several different vestments. Besides the monastic hood, chief among
these is the cope, as Meg Cormack suggests. Other common meanings include
the mozzetta or the cappa magna for pontifical dress, or by extension, the
totality of items in whatever pontifical dress a particular cleric or office
holder in a particular place might be entitled to wear by special privilege.
Don't know enough about the evolution of the word's usage in these various
meanings to help you with which of these might or might not apply to the
time and place of these of the docs you are editing.

I'm editing papers about liturgical dramas and I'm bothered by the
"cappa" the monks used to wear: it is commented thus in a footnote,
referring to Blandine-Dominique Berger
« La chape n'est pas un vêtement liturgique mais le manteau que mettaient
habituellement les clercs et les religieux pour sortir ou pour se protéger
du froid. La chape comportait un capuchon pour la tête. Elle était faite de
drap sans aucune ornementation ».
But I remember the feasts solemne majus were celebrated "cum cappa", as the
conception: is the Berger's definition ok ? Where could I find a more
accurate one ?
