medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> Theobald of Marly (d. 1247) Theobald was a French noble who spent
> time at the court of Philip Augustus but left to become a Cistercian
> at Vaux-de-Cernay in 1220. He became abbot in 1235.

Quite amazingly, seeing as how the abbey church at Vaux-de-Cernay has been
demolished, Theobald's tomb slab has survived, and is now mounted, with several
others, on the few standing walls left of the nave. Some of the monastic buildings
have survived, however, and have been incorporated into a luxury hotel/conference
centre. It's quite a remarkable site.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
