medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture to all on the list who responded to my query about teaching medieval religion - thank you very much for your very interesting comments, which I hope you will allow me to use in my paper. The comments on continuity have been particularly interesting - I hesitated before I used the term 'catholic' to refer to the pre-Reformation church in Europe - maybe I was trying to suggest the perceived continuity. While I have tried to stress the historical context of my discussion of the sacraments, devotional practices etc., my catholic students have tended to interpret such a discussion as the history of 'their' church. (Having been brought up as an Anglican, I tend to think of it as 'my' church too - if only because Anglicans worhip in ancient churches where the evidence of pre-Reformation practices are all around). Incidentally, when I attended some papers sponsored by the Institute of Cistercian Studies (?is that the right name?) at Kalamazoo a few years ago I was aware that, for some, what was currently understood by 'Cistercian spirituality' was the same as what 'spiritualitas' meant for medieval Cistercians. But I don't want to hog the list, just to say thank you - and if any of you are at Leeds maybe we can continue the discussion there? and - on the (light) subject of female/male language, Virginia Woolf argued in her essay on 'Women and Fiction' that women faced many difficulties when starting to write: 'To begin with, there is the technical difficulty . . . that the very form of the sentence does not fit her. It is a sentence made by men; it is too loose, too heavy, too pompous for a woman's use'. In _A Room of One's OWn_ she suggests that all true creativity must be androgynous. best wishes Cate ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
