Hello Tim, I've been looking at the same issue myself recently. The impression I get is that the standards for digital image description fall broadly into two: those to do with helping the end user with retrieval (which suggests something fairly straightforward, perhaps Dublin Core based, or following the MIDAS 'Resources' Information scheme) and those to do with the technical formats, resolution, file formats etc (which suggest something more complex).
