Location The Maltings, Lewes
Contract 12 months fixed term contract
Hours 37 hours per week
Where you will work and how (if necessary) it fits into the bigger picture:
This post is funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. You will form part of a team involved in preparing lists of parish records held in East and West Sussex record offices for mounting on a central Access to Archives website (www.a2a.org.uk). You will be based at East Sussex Record Office, Lewes. Other members of the project team will be based at West Sussex Record Office, Chichester, and you will liaise with them on the project's implementation.
The job and what is involved:
You will list parish records, edit existing lists which do not conform to accepted standards and enter them on a database (CALM 2000) for export to the central Access to Archives database. You will edit and copy existing lists and send them to West Sussex Record Office for marking up prior to rekeying, and import all rekeyed lists into the CALM database. You will also contribute to the promotion of the Access to Archives website and the use of parish records.
The skills you will bring to the job:
You will have a sound knowledge of English history and experience of working with archive materials. You will have sound computer skills and the ability to plan work, monitor progress and meet deadlines with minimal day-to-day supervision.
This post would provide an introduction to records which are held and heavily used in all county record offices and training and experience in basic listing techniques. It would therefore be suitable for someone who is considering a career in archives and wishes to gain pre-qualification experience.
