Post Title: Research Associate

Location:  University of Hull, Faculty of Science, Department of Geography

A Research Associate is wanted to work on a research project ‘Credibility claims as scientific commodities’, funded by the ESRC Science in Society Programme.  The project will investigate how science is associated with products for public consumption, such as the claims for the environmental or health benefits of organic food and sustainable timber.  Using product case studies, the research will look at how these claims are scientifically justified by producers and independent verifiers, such as NGOs, and how they are perceived by consumers.  Data collection will involve qualitative focus groups with consumers and interviews with the producers and verifiers of claims, plus a quantitative statement-sorting exercise with both groups.  The project will start in spring 2004 and be based in the University of Hull, but will have input from Staffordshire University.   The person appointed will be responsible for gathering and collecting primary and secondary data through interviews, focus groups and a statement-sorting exercise, transcribing the interviews and focus groups and undertaking preliminary data analysis, working with the project leaders in preparing reports and papers and presenting the results, managing day-to-day research activities and liaising with Steering Group members and preparing data for archiving with ESRC at the end of the project.

The successful applicant will ideally have completed, or shortly expect to complete, a Ph.D. in a relevant area of social science, especially in geography, political science or sociology.  Experience of liaising with NGOs and/or researching elites in politically sensitive policy fields would be an advantage.
