medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (21. August) is the feast day of: Anastasius Cornicularius (d. 274) A "cornicularius" is a rank in the Roman army, and Anastasius was an army officer converted because he was so impressed by St. Agapitus at Salone (Italy; although later tradition confused this with Salona in Dalmatia). He was then martyred. Euprepius of Verona (3rd cent.?) Venerated as the first bishop of Verona, tradition makes Euprepius one of the multitude of bishops appointed by St. Peter. Nothing more seems to be known about him, but I'm making a collection of bogus apostolic foundations. Privatus of Gevaudan (d. 260) Bishop Privatus (Gevaudan is in the Massif Central, France) was a victim of the disruptions of the third century, when German tribes pillage Gaul, etc. Privatus refused to tell where some of his people were hiding (it's not clear why the barbarians wanted to know this), and was beaten to death as a result. Bassa & sons (d. 304) Bassa was the wife of a non-Christian priest. She and her three sons were martyred at Larissa in Greece, where their cult developed at an early age. Bonosus and Maximian (d. 362) Two more army officers, these two were based at Antioch. They refused to give up their cohort banner (emblazoned with a chi-rho) at Emperor Julian's command, and were tortured and beheaded. Bernard Tolomei (blessed) (d. 1348) Bernard was a native of Siena who studied law and then became a civic official. In 1313 he became a hermit at Monteoliveto (ten miles from home), where he soon founded a monastery, the mother house of the Olivetans. He and many of his zealous new monks nursed plague victims---and died as a result. BT's body was lost in the inevitable confusion of the first wave of plague, which seems to be the main reason why he was never canonized. Dr. Phyllis G.
