This training is being funded by ESF projects located in the Centre for the Promotion of Social Inclusion, directed by Professor Gaye Heathcote. It is likely, with the rise in numbers of non-traditional learners accessing HE, and an increase in diagnosis of the condition, that you will come across someone with Asperger's syndrome at some time soon. They may be very competent in certain areas but lacking social skills and exhibiting behaviour, which may seem unusual. Asperger's syndrome is a form of Autism, associated with more able people (but not exactly synonymous with 'able autism'). With the right kind of support, students with Asperger's syndrome can do very well. This session is designed to empower you to enable students with Asperger's syndrome by increasing your understanding of the condition and it's impact on individuals at university. Nicola Martin works across FE and HE and has extensive personal, teaching and research experience with people with Asperger's syndrome. The session is offered free to all staff. It will particularly benefit staff who have direct contact with students, including course tutors, admission tutors, examination officers, personal tutors and staff in student support roles. The session will cover the following: · Characteristics of Asperger’s syndrome · How Asperger’s syndrome is likely to impact in a learning environment · Support strategies in FE and HE · The importance of transitional planning · Group activities · Q&A · Sources of help The training has been replicated at the All Saints and Alsager campuses both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure maximum choice and attendance.
