medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Well, ideally is probably not quite the word I would use. My point
originally was that medieval artists in the 13th century would not paint a
Franciscan habit in warm brown, if the color was in fact a "dirty gray"
which seems to be the agreed upon hue in this discussion. (Indeed, looking
over some slides of the Assisi cathedral "Giotto School cycle" dirty-gray is
a description one could certainly use of the habits there depicted.
My point was simply that the artists, particularly if associated with the
order, would use a more or less accurate color because o the importance of
the habit to the pride and identity of the order.
I have noticed, along this line, that medieval and Ren depictions of
Carmelite habits do attempt to reproduce the extraordinary "cream" color of
their mantles, rather than simply using a flat white.
