MARC CONVERSION SOFTWARE - USEMARCON Plus v1.4 USEMARCON is a software application that allows users to convert bibliographic records from one MAchine-Readable Cataloguing (MARC) format to another. In 1995, a project <http://www.kb.nl/kb/sbo/bibinfra/usema-en.html> funded by the European Union was set up to address the issue of differing MARC formats. The project was successfully completed in 1997 with the development of the USEMARCON (User Controlled Generic MARC Converter) software. On behalf of the British Library and CERL (the Committee of European Research Librarians) Crossnet Systems Limited <http://www.crxnet.com> enhanced the application to introduce new functionality which allowed the program to be integrated more closely with other applications for conversions, e.g. as part of a Z39.50 server. The software has now been further developed and adapted by ATP Library Systems Ltd, Finland to an API format. Following testing at Helsinki University and the British Library (v1.3), this latest version of USEMARCON (Version 1.4) makes USEMARCON more suitable for integration in other software, mainly fast on-the-fly conversions in Z39.50 clients and multi-threaded Z39.50 servers. The British Library and ATP Library Systems Ltd is making the new v1.4 software and related documentation available free of charge to users and application developers in order to promote usage of USEMARCON. Potential users are, however, asked to complete a freeware licence to cover the use of the software. For further information and to download the software, please visit the British Library web site at http://www.bl.uk/services/bibliographic/usemarcon.html Users can also visit the newly set up USEMARCON discussion board <http://members5.boardhost.com/usemarcon/> to talk with other users or developers who may be working on similar issues or projects.
