medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I am not a Cassian scholar so I quote from Columba Stewart's Cassian the Monk (New York, Oxford, 1998), p. 4: "First, his name: he is always called "Cassianus" by his contemporaries and near contemporaries. In his own works, the name "Johannes" appears only twice, and "Cassianus" never. It may be that Cassian was his given name and John a monastic one. Cassianus was a common enough name, derived from the even more common Cassius; both were found throughout eastern and western regions of the Mediterranean world. The name itself tells us nothing about his birthplace."
