medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (4. July) is the feast day of:

Ecclesius of Ravenna (d. 532) Ecclesius was archbishop of Ravenna between
522 and 532. He was responsible for the construction of the basilica of
San Vitale (with imperial financing) and also the Ravenna church of Santa
Maria Maggiore.

Andrew of Crete (d. 740) Andrew was born in Damascus in c. 660. He became
a monk in Jerusalem, operated an orphanage in Constantinople for some
years, and in c. 700 became archbishop of Gortyn (Crete). Noted for his
eloquent preaching, Andrew was most famous for his liturgical poetry; some
of his compositions are still sung in the Greek Orthodox liturgy.

Ulric of Augsburg (d. 973) Our first papally-canonized saint, canonized in
993. A figure who looms large in the religious history of the tenth
century, Ulrich was born in 890, and educated at the great monastery of St.
Gallen. Instead of becoming a monk, though (a chronologically unlikely
legend reports that he was advised against it by St. Gall's resident
prophetic recluse, Wiborada), Ulric took up a career as a secular cleric.
He was bishop of Augsburg for fifty years, playing an important role in
royal/imperial and ecclesiastical affairs, fighting off Magyars, building
churches, endowing monasteries, etc.

Elizabeth of Portugal (d. 1336) Elizabeth (or Isabel) was the daughter of
King Peter III of Aragon, and was named after her kinswoman E. of Hungary.
She married King Denis of Portugal. While her husband neglected her,
Elizabeth led a life of piety and almsgiving. She was famed as a
peacemaker; her most notable feat was preventing a war between Portugal and
Castile. After her husband's death, E. became a Franciscan tertiary and
lived in great simplicity. She was canonized in 1626.
