medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Christopher,
I don't know the novel, but if it's set post-1230 in Languedoc the good men
or women or perfects or heretics tended to travel with members of the
opposite sex to try and avoid being suspected of being a good man or woman
or perfect or heretic, as their pre-persecution preference was to travel in
single sex pairs. The idea was two men (or women) traveling together could
monitor each others behavior and, by praying together, enter in community
with Christ. Once the inquisition came along, however, they had to pretend
to be more interested in contact with the opposite sex. (some didn't have to
pretend, but that's another story).

remember something of the kind in The Name of the Rose, where similar
accusations against 14th century heretics are mentioned

fWiw, in the best of her historical novels (_Destiny of Fire_), Zoe
Oldenbourg
has her albigensian heritic "preacher" going around the countryside in mixed
company, i believe.

fiction, yes; and from the 50s, yes; but all of Z.O.'s medieval novels are
quite well founded on original sources, it seems to me.

beats reading all that dry, akademical prose, at least (but, alas, probably
not citable in your own dry, akdemical prose).
